This fabulous runway documented Bob Mackie dress was designed for his spring / summer 1997 collection was Mackie's triumphant return to the runway after a three year hiatus. Known for his high-octane, spotlight-stealing designs, he dressed entertainment icons across the globe, including Cher, Elton John, Liza Minnelli, Marilyn Monroe, Dolly Parton and Diana Ross. True to Mackie’s trademark style, this mesmerising gown was designed to highlight and flatter the feminine form. This is an extremely detailed example. These dresses were extremely costly in their day and always hand beaded by the most skilled artisans onto signature mesh.
The top has long-sleeves and is tailored from a sheer navy mesh with tonal zips completing the cuffs. Heavily and intricately embellished all-over - as was Mackie’s signature - it is detailed with diagonal stripes of iridescent navy blue beads. The stunning beadwork of the top is counterbalanced by the volume of the skirt. Tailored from rich navy blue taffeta, it has a slight sheen that means it shines almost petrol blue in the light. To achieve such volume, Mackie’s expert craftsmanship comes into play - the skirt is lined with petal-upon-petal of black tulle, sewn onto a stiff tulle frame. A layer of navy satin sits under the tulle against the skin, making this piece a highly comfortable wear. The dress has an elegant high-neck that adds a formality to the silhouette. The bust is lined with a navy bustier for modesty and it fastens at the back with a tonal navy zip.
This superb gown is in excellent vintage condition with no flaws to the beadwork or taffeta and looks barely worn, if at all. Tagged a vintage US 8, a UK 12, but this is probably suited to a size smaller or in between sizes. The fabric has no stretch.
